Miss Buttercup the Buff Orpington is an egg laying "dud." She has only laid ...what?.... 3 eggs in 4 weeks! I'm so disappointed, especially since she lays such lovely spotted eggs. Okay, okay, it is winter time, so she has an excuse, sort of. However, she isn't molting, and all the other girls are laying fairly consistently, even little Olive! And so, out of frustration, I told my husband that I'll give her until April, and if she doesn't turn out to be a consistent egg layer, then it is off to the butcher she goes! We'll see if I can actually make good on that threat.
I have read from other chickeners that Buff Orpingtons are great layers, and there are others who claim that they aren't, well I say mine isn't ....so far. She is also some what of a bully, so if she does indeed end up on our dinner table, then I hope she at least tastes good. If it comes to culling her from the flock, I might try the breed again, just to see if I got the odd ball. But for now, as far as I'm concerned, I might as well re-name her Butterdud.
