Modesty In Christianity:
A Rare Jewel
Just look at this picture. What do you think this advertisement is for? A name brand cosmetics company, or a new risque T.V. show? Perhaps an add for lingerie, or would you think it was a billboard sign for your local convention center's Adultcon roadshow? Well, you would be wrong if you thought those things. Now I will post the whole picture.
Looks Can Be Deceiving
Yes, you are reading this right. Amazingly this advertisement is for "Christian" Fashion Week. I ran across this photo when I was searching for - well - I can't even remember what I was searching for now. Because when I saw this, I just couldn't believe my eyes, so I had to write about it. Yes dear reader, it seems that the Christian world is now openly embracing the idea that looking like a scarlet clad harlot is now considered to be a "Christian" thing to do. After all, what self-respecting "Christian" woman would actually want to be dressed modestly, or to wear minimal make-up, or even [gasp] none at all? Not when she could look like a corner working girl, or a ritzy high-class call girl, right? The article from Zondervan's blog claims that Christian Fashion Week is a useful tool that honor's God. Based on the add we see here, is that really the case?
Supposedly, Christian Fashion Week is being used to highlight modesty, but is that what their advertisement shows? Not by a long shot. What we see is an overly made up woman with a seductive, pouty red lipped, 'come hither' raised eyebrow taunt. Isn't this false advertising? How many women went to this "Christian" event in the hopes of obtaining a biblical excuse to use fashion as a way of gratifying their vanity, or as means to entrap men? What about the women who were disappointed by the ironic contradiction? At least I'm hoping that is what the founders of the event intended to convey via the harlot ad, irony. The only camp that I'm fairly sure was gratified, was the one from lukewarm Laodacia.

I realize one should not always judge a book by its cover, but lets not forget that looks can be deceiving. I ask you: is it a good thing to use false advertising to lure unsuspecting people to a pseudo representation of Christian morality? Is that the tactic Jesus and the disciples used to preach the gospel? My favorite part on the Facebook page for this event was the "For women only bathing suit show." Really? Yes, really. To quote the blogger Joelle on Facebook:
"The founders believed this would remove any awkwardness on the part of the models and the guests, and allow for an
interactive time between the models and the audience after the show." [emphasis mine]
Awkwardness? An interesting word to describe modesty. Keep that very revealing tidbit of self-incrimination in mind as you feast your eyes on what the show's organizers consider to be "modest" swim wear, and then maybe you will see why there was a concern regarding awkwardness.

Admittedly, I'm no fashion 'expert', but I am a modesty 'expert", and what was on display that night at Christian Fashion Week, definitely wasn't modesty, not even close. I must admit, there isn't a lot of cleavage to be seen, or any butt floss, but there is still plenty of leg, and let's face it, the suits are still quite form fitting. Here is a little swimsuit tip from yours truly- if you have to shave your armpits and get a bikini waxing just to be able to wear your swim suit, then it isn't modest. And now dear reader, feast your flesh weary eyes on what is actual bona fide modest swim wear. Ta Dah!!! See for yourself and compare the difference between the two styles, both of which claim to be modest swim wear.
So now please tell me, which of these two styles is really modest? The glaring fact that the founders of the Christian Fashion week event were concerned enough about the "awkwardness" of the post show interaction between the guests with the half naked models by making the event for women only, that just goes to show that they knew their "modest Christian" swimsuits were still too revealing for men to see, or to even wear the label - modest. This clearly displays the hypocrisy of the event. If the models were really wearing modest suits, like the suits pictured directly above, then men would have been more than welcome to join the event and no "awkwardness" would have been present. This event is truly the height of hypocrisy, and a display of the out right ignorance and ultimately, an act of disobedience toward God's word.
Can We Talk?
Ladies, when a man sees a woman's cleavage and the curves of her breasts via tight fitting, low cut tops, men instinctively want to grab them. I'm not making this up, and I'm not trying to make men sound like perverts, it's just a fact. When a man sees a woman's curvy hips, thighs, buns, and crotch, it leads him to think of sex. Again, I'm not trying to be nasty, it is just a fact, they are visually stimulated, it just how they are wired. Dear reader, when a man accepts Christ as his savior, this visual reaction to a woman's bodily curves doesn't magically go away. While it seems that most men are somewhat anesthetized against this form of visual stimulation, that is only because they are bombarded with it from cradle to grave thanks to the over sexed media putting half-naked women in front of their faces every where they turn. Is it any wonder why western men need Viagra, or why rape is on the rise? It is worthy to note that pornography is becoming more and more of a problem in the world, even more alarming is that pornography is on the rise in the Church. The definition of pornography is:
"Printed, or visual material containing the explicit description, or display of sexual organs, or activity."
While a woman can be clad from head to toe in a skin covering leotard, this same garment is form fitting, or one can say, it's "painted on." Even though no skin is showing, the curves and implications of those curves are still there. This stuff may not be hard core porn, but it could be consider as: "soft porn." Read the following definition carefully.
"Softcore pornography is a form of filmic or photographic pornography or erotica that is less sexually explicit than
hardcore pornography..."
The words" less sexually explicit" means it is still sexually explicit, but to a lesser degree. So really, this definition can be applied to what passes as "fashion" ads these days. All the shows on TLC and other cable networks dealing with fashion are overly concerned with being "sexy." Why? Because according to them, feeling sexy is what gives you confidence and makes you feel good about yourself. This should not be a Christian woman's reason for feeling good about herself. Ironically, even the world has their limits and rules as to what they consider to be streetwalker sexiness and respectable sexiness. Kinda laughable, but I see their point. Uh well, sort of.

Getting back to the modest "Christian" swimwear issue; dear Christian reader, if the above pictures showing genuine modest swimsuits don't appeal to you: meaning you feel they are too modest, or might be too restrictive by getting in the way of you acquiring a sun-worshiper's tan, then you need to do a very thorough and serious inventory of your immodest heart.
Judge Not Lest Ye Be Judged
If I had a dime for every time that verse was misapplied, I could retire to Hawaii as a very wealthy woman! Chapter 7 in the book of Matthew deals with hypocrisy, and not with being able to judge the character of a person, or circumstances pertaining to any moral situation. Immoral, or sinning people are fairly good at trying to hide behind this verse. However, Jesus says that one must FIRST remove the chunk of wood [sin] from their eye, BEFORE they can help remove the speck [sin] in someone else's eye. That means to avoid being a hypocrite, you must FIRST stop committing a particular sin, BEFORE you help someone stop committing the same sin. Hypocrisy in a Christian's life is to be avoided, because the judgement hypocrites mete out to other's will be given to them. Sin is not to be excused; sin is never okay for a Christian, it is to be removed from our eyes.
Hypocrisy Only Begets More Hypocrisy
One of the points that was highlighted in the blog article I read for Christian Fashion Week was that the organizer's of this "Christian" fashion spectacle, gave all the glory to God for the event. You know something, that reminds me of a scene from 'Coming To America.' You know, the scene where Arsino Hall's character: Reverend Brown, called special attention to the nearly naked girls standing behind him during Black Awareness Week? In this scene, the Reverend had the audacity to lead the audience into gawking at the scantily clad bodies of the pageant contestants while giving God the glory for making them so well built, as if by doing so, the lust inducing beauty pageant was made righteous. And then in a classic Freudian slip, he had the nerve to call The Almighty: "The Hugh Hefner on High." Dear reader, giving God the "glory" for our sins, and ill conceived ideas is in reality, insulting, rather than glorifying to God.
Giving money to a Christian charity, doesn't make an event a "Christian" event either. Christian Fashion Week's organizers claimed that most [not all] of the event's proceeds went to a truly wonderful ministry called: "Created", located in Tampa Florida. "Created" is an amazing ministry made up of women, who go into the sleazy clubs where women are exploited in the legal sex industry of strip clubs and they witness the gospel to them and offer assistance to get out of that trade. The blogger in the article I read claims that these women are forced to sell their bodies. Is this for real? If they are forced to sell their bodies, then why aren't the police involved in this ministry? Apparently she has confused the legal trade of topless dancers with the illegal trade of prostitution and the human trafficking of sex slaves. And even though prostitution is illegal in many [not all] states, the women who sell themselves do so of their own free will. At any rate, can you see the moral tragedy here, or is it just me? Monies raised by displaying women wearing immodest swimwear and other immodest clothing were then used to help remove exploited women from the sex industries of topless dancing and even prostitution; careers that are renown for their severe lack of modest raiment. Amazing. Do they think that by giving some monies to this worthy cause, that act somehow gives them some sort of credibility and shields them from their hypocrisy? Apparently so.

Can You Tell The Difference?
Christian women are supposed to be jewels, or precious possessions of their faithful Heavenly Father. They are to be prized not only for their beauty and shine, but also for their rarity. But how is a Christian woman to shine and what is it that makes her such a rare jewel? One facet of a Christian woman's beauty is displayed through modesty. To illustrate my point, let's consider the real world of gemstones as an analogy of inner beauty, because after all, girls like shiny things. Yes, I said inner beauty.
Not many people have seen what a genuine diamond looks like by using a jeweler's eyeglass. Dear reader, can you tell which of these two jewels is the fake just by looking at them with the naked eye? Sure, the two lovely sparkling gems look identical on the outside, but only one has any real value, while the other is a worthless chunk of glass, or crystal. You would need a jewelers eyeglass and some gemology knowledge to determine which is the real jewel. God has given us the Bible, or Holy Scripture, as his jeweler's eye glass. We can use it to help us tell a fake Christian from the real thing.
Also, in the world of gem stones, the stone that has the least amount of outer and inner flaws [inclusions] has the most value. So you can have two valuable gems, but one will have more value than the other. I only say that because we all have flaws, some more than others. But our Lord, the Master Jeweler, carefully cuts them away, leaving only the sparkling facets of clear cut quality behind. This divine inclusion removing process can take more time for some gemstones than others. So we must be patient with each other. Yet, many backsliding Christians revel in this vain philosophy: "I'm not perfect, I'm just forgiven." While that sounds nice, it isn't what Jesus expects from us. He demands holiness, and obedience, not a lame excuse for being a slovenly Christian. When the surface inclusion of immodest dressing is removed, it is replaced by the facet of dressing modestly as an outward proof of the removal of inner flaws such as: lust, pride, and vanity.
Again, this illustration was meant for inner beauty that reveals itself outwardly, not mere outer beauty. Inner beauty has a way of shining through the exterior of a person, wouldn't you agree? This is the kind of rare beauty that God is most concerned with [1 Peter 3:3-4], and should be a hallmark of his daughters, his rare and priceless jewels.

Friends with the world, or with God?
When will Christians, more specifically Christian women in this case, develop a love for God and holiness more than a love for what is the latest fashion? When will they get a God blessed clue that making friends with this world, in any form, or fashion, means they are making God their enemy? That is what Scripture says, and no amount of justification, or female manipulation tactics, or charity giving will change that fact. We might be able to dupe ourselves into believing our own spin doctoring, but is God convinced? God is not opposed to his girls dressing in pretty clothes, but biblical precedent shows that he is far and away more concerned with inward spiritual matters, rather than outward physical matters. After all, there is a difference between what God says is "pretty" and what the world says is "pretty." I encourage you to find out what God says is pretty and leave what the world says is pretty in the garbage where it belongs.
Obedience Isn't Legalism, or Religious Bondage
When I was really and truly saved, about three years ago, I started getting gentle hints from Jesus about my attire, since no pastor, or other Christian gave me any kind of instruction, or correction on this subject. There were times that I would inexplicably find myself on modesty websites, or I would start to feel strangely uncomfortable when I would put on my tight fitting tops and jeans. I finally began to understand that Jesus had something to say about my clothing, and he was requiring an answer regarding my inward motives for wearing what I wore. It didn't take me long to realize that wearing tight fitting clothes was not in accordance with the law of love. If I really loved Jesus and my Christian brothers, then I would gladly give up my "right" to wear tight fitting tops and jeans, things I considered to be more comfortable, for looser fitting tops and skirts that fell below my knees.
Dear Reader, do you feel that this is "leagalism", or "religious bondage?" If so, then you don't know what real "legalism" is. What the so-called Christian word changers really mean when they say someone is "legalistic" is that they are feeling convicted, or being made to feel bad for participating in sin. Those who think I'm advocating "religious bondage" also don't know what the book of James has to say regarding true and pure religion [James 1:26-27]. God will not send me, or anyone else to hell because we might wear pants, or a tight fitting top, unless of course we did so under the motive to seduce someone, which is akin to committing adultery. We simply can't fool the Almighty. He knew I didn't wear that stuff to attract male attention on purpose, but deep down, I knew I did attract the attention, but didn't care to do anything about it. In truth, many young women aren't even aware that their clothing choices matter a great deal in regards to sexual purity for men. However, ignorance is not a licence to continue in sinful behavior, as I was about to find out.
Yes, I was simply clueless as to the natural effects that my immodest wardrobe really had upon the male psyche. When Jesus finally and lovingly brought this to my attention and drove his point home, and when complete understanding finally hit my soul like a ton of bricks, I was devastated by what I was doing. I repented, and immediately started to make the necessary changes to my wardrobe. It didn't happen overnight, as I could only replace items as my budget allowed. I must be clear, Jesus didn't make me do this, He didn't have to. I wanted to please him, as I knew that this was an obedience issue, and not a "leagalistic", or "religious bondage" issue . Just as when a practicing witch that is truly saved instinctively gets rid of all their rock-n-roll music, likewise I got rid of my immodest clothing.
As for shopping, I let common biblical sense and the Holy Spirit be my guide as to what is modest apparel. When considering an item of clothing I always ask myself if it shows too much information about my breasts, or if the length of the dress, or skirt shows too much leg. Will the skirt, or dress cling too close to my body when I walk? These are simple questions that can be readily answered by an honest yes, or no. When I'm not sure, or when I'm about to deliberately step over the modesty threshold, I get a check, or nudge in my spirit, which prompts me to obey. So, I put the item back on the rack, or I save the item for my husband's eyes only. I now wear tops that are tailored and feminine, but they don't hug my curves like an Indy car speeding around turn number four. That means they have pretty lace and ribbons that adorn the brightly colored 'girly' patterns of the garment. And I have also given up wearing pants for the most part, but because my husband is concerned that my skirts might get caught in my bike chain, I do reluctantly relent and wear pants, but that is the only time I wear pants. I'm seriously thinking of sewing some culottes [koo-lots] for this reason, and then I can finally kick the pants to the curb.
Some people might consider my style unattractive. Well, you don't have to dress like I do; but you can still wear "modern" clothes that are modest. Even though you will be hard pressed to find modest ready to wear clothing off the rack, the fashion savvy lady who is determined to honor her God with her modesty won't be deterred by such a challenge. I urge you to search out modesty websites, but I caution you that some are a little too radical and go a little too far. Still others offer modern and classic styles that are modest, simply elegant, and very flattering. Yes, for the longest time I was oblivious to the role modesty was to play in my life as a Christian woman. I was a little shocked just how immodest I was. My dear reader, if you are a woman, then you must understand what the sight of a woman's curves do to a man. God made men this way on purpose, but it is not for us to test, or tempt them into lust by using their god-given visual cues against them, whether we intend to or not.

In Conclusion
Yes, we are in the world, but we are not to be of it. For Christian women, I realize that this is a very touchy subject, and many will look to justify their immodesty, or even avoid this issue altogether. Some will point out that modesty can be taken too far. That is true. Just as there are extremes in perusing physical beauty to the point of narcissism, modesty can be taken to the other end of the pride spectrum, that of self-serving abasement. True godly modesty is extreme only in its obedience, because the subject of modesty is an inward heart condition. What I mean by that is, you can clad a slutty woman with several frumpy potato sacks, and roll her tresses into a sever bun, and then remove all her war paint, yet she will somehow still exude raw animalistic sensuality. Conversely, if you place a tomboy in beautiful sexy apparel, sweep her hair into an attractive up-do, and then apply heavy seductive make-up, she will most likely look and act embarrassed and awkward. A truly modest-hearted woman is confident in her real femininity, that of her inner beauty, so much so that she doesn't feel the need to flaunt it or debase it externally. Do you see my point?
Even if you cover your cleavage, yet have a top so tight others can see you digest your lunch, then you are a failure in the modesty department. If you wear loose jeans, or slacks that cover all of your legs and go above your navel, rather than ones that are painted on, or fit snugly around your hips, then you are still a failure in the modesty department. Why? Because a man can still see your curvy derriere and your crotch. Don't believe me? Then ask your brother, husband, father, or trusted male friend what they think of when they see a woman dressed in pants, as opposed to a woman in a flowing skirt. Ask them if their eyes are drawn to a woman's chest when she wears tight low cut sweaters, or when she wears a loosely fitted long sleeved crew-neck top? Ladies, there is absolutely nothing wrong with looking sexy, just as long as it is done in the intimate privacy of your bedroom for your husband's enjoyment, and not anyone else's. By God's design , a woman's body was meant for the exclusive enjoyment of her husband, and not anyone else, and that is only part of what makes the marriage bed so great. And all the Christian ladies who enjoy faithful marital sex said, "Amen and Amen!"
