I love to cook! I grew up with a great cook, my mom. According to my mom, my grandmother wasn't a very good cook, so my mom learned how to cook from her aunt, when she moved to California, which was her life long childhood dream. She was also a voracious reader of cook books.
To be honest, I don't recall helping her that much in the kitchen as a young girl, why that was I don't know. I was about 17 when I started to take a real interest in cooking. Maybe it was because my mom had been working out side of the home for a few years by that time. At any rate, it clicked with me.
When I saw this retro magnet while I was looking for an image for this page, it made me laugh because it perfectly mirrors my own mom's motto in answer to a meal time complaint coming from one or more of her six children: "You can like it, or lump it!" She also reminded us that she wasn't a restaurant, another of my favorite quips from her. Speaking of restaurants, there was a time when it used to be a special treat to go out for dinner, but in the 80's, it was almost a regular occurrence for a family whose parents both worked outside the home. Ironically, thanks to the boom of restaurant shows, it seems that there are more restaurants per capita than ever before. Nearly gone are the days when the housewife's job of being a full time hospitality technician (cook), was the norm; now it is the exception.
But there is what seems to be, a home cooked meal revival sweeping the nation, thanks in part to the innate desire of a woman to feed her family something wholesome and homemade, and especially on those blessed days known as: the weekend! Innovations coming from the appliance world, and prep ready food market, and food shows galore, have also lent a helping hand for a working mom to whip out a home cooked meal in a snap. Just look at Rach, she can do it in just 30 minutes! The recipes here, the ones I use, are tried and true, easy to make for the most part, and delicious to eat! I hope you enjoy them as much as my family and friends do. Bon appetite!
