o...not literal 'gold,' I'm talking plant nursery gold! Other gardeners will understand what I mean. A few days ago, my husband came home from work and said he got a hot tip from a fellow co-worker to check out H&H Nursery in Lakewood, and as soon as we could, we headed out there, and boy oh boy, am I glad we did! My mother-in-law loves to garden too, so we brought her along to mine the flora riches.
Dateline: Sunday June 1, 2014 o...not literal 'gold,' I'm talking plant nursery gold! As we walked from gravel strewed aisle to aisle, my husband said, "I could easily drop a pay check here." It's so true! The prices are very reasonable and the stock is varied. Well, they have some plants we don't see at Home Depot or Lowe's, and the nursery is rather extensive. Oh and if you go when the thermometer climbs above 80 degrees, then don't forget your sunscreen, wide brimmed hat and icy beverage. They also have port-o-potties just in case you need to answer nature's call, so wet wipes may come in handy too. Sure, they didn't have the climbing rose I wanted (Mme Alfred Carriere), but they DID have the cherry tree (Minnie Royal) we wanted! Yeehaw! Robert had already bought the Royal Lee tree at Home Depot a few weeks ago, but since HD won't carry it's pollinator (Minnie Royal) till next year, and a local nursery sells it for an arm and a leg, we were just going to wait. Now we don't have to! Thanks H&H Nursery for being so awesome! But the awesomeness didn't stop there.....oh no! I finally found a lemon verbena! I don't understand why Home Depot (H.D.) and Lowe's doesn't carry this herb, needless to say, it has been very hard to acquire, that is until yesterday! We found a lovely 1 gal. specimen for about $6 bucks! Sold! But that's not the BEST part of the verdant treasures we found. I finally found ROMAN CHAMOMILE! Yes! After long and disappointing searches, this evasive variety was spotted and quickly scooped up by me. If memory serves, I think I hugged them. Other gardener's will understand. Alas, they only had six plants, so I greedily took them all! Sorry, I just couldn't help myself. And there they are! All six frilly little mounds of green planted between the stones of the path leading past our apple trees! I just hope they are a regularly sold product, because I need at least 20 more of them to completely plant the path. Anyway..... Ahhhh. It was a banner day at H&H Nursery in Lakewood California. And we can't wait to go back soon, and mine for more "green" gold among the many rows of plants.
