Before the time change, it got light here in my neck of Whittier, Ca. around 5:30 am during mid-Feb. to the beginning of march. That's just the earth doing its part in maintaining its orbit around the sun. It's a seasonal thing. This was great because I normally get up at 4:20 am. Yes, I said 4:20 am. Why isn't important right now. Well, of you must know, I perform my wifely duties of getting my husband off to work. Like making him his breakfast and brewing him some coffee, finish packing his lunch, and getting my all important goodbye smooch (mmmmwah)! Then I have about 40 minutes to put away laundry from the night before, make my bed, clean up the kitchen, get my and Kyle's breakfast started, and feed the cats before heading outside to let the girls out of their coop just in time to greet the dawn. Then I would go back inside after feeding and watering my flock to jump in the shower and start the rest of my day clean and chicken poo free. It was perfect! Perfect I tell you!
Now thanks to DLS, the sun doesn't crest the horizon until 6:20ish am, instead of 5:30 am and this throws a huge wrench in my perfect schedule. Thanks a lot William Willet, George V. Hudson, and that Founding Father jokester, Ben Franklin, whose motivation for this nonsense was to apparently save candles. I hope y'all are happy. This is why politicians need to stay out of commerce. So wait, why do we need to set our clocks ahead an hour again? Oh! We don't because thanks to geniuses like Thomas Edison and Nicola Tesla, we have this thing called "electricity" flowing from power lines into our homes. And when I flip this little switch on the wall, something amazing happens! "Click" Darkness is no more. Well, that is if the bulb isn't burnt out, and you paid the electricity bill.
Arguments for Daylight Saving
Basically, what I'm trying to say is that I'm sick and tired of following day light saving time. It has taken me two weeks (did I mention that already?) to acclimate to the new time schedule, and I have nearly gone crazy trying to sort out the pseudo-scientific reasoning behind it in my sleep deprived mind. But I keep trying. Let's see, the sun rises earlier in the summertime so, if I set my clock ahead that means I get up later, then I save light?
No. Wait. That can't be right. If I set my clock back one hour in winter, and get up earlier while the sun rises later I get more light, no that's not right either- Ahhhhh! See what I mean? I'm so confused I don't know whether to scratch my clock, or wind my butt! All I know is that it is now DARK at 5:30 and I have to wait for the sun to rise to wake my chickens up. That means I'm 40 min. or more behind schedule. Is all of this frustration worth one fricken hour? No! Wait a second....I just realized that our industrial society runs by the clock, and not by the sundial!
Anyway, I believe that all of the claims for the reason behind DLS are "saving electricity" are hogwash. If we were really interested in saving energy, then we would rid ourselves of the casino meccas of Las Vegas, Branson, and Atlantic City, that suck up WAY more electricity than good citizens going to work. Not to mention, that we could put the major metropolises of L.A. Miami, and New York City (you know, the city that NEVER sleeps) on a 1 am lights out curfew. This policy would save more energy than giving and taking away an hour of sleep to the world populace, twice a year. So this is not about energy conservation is it? Let's stop the madness people and work to make DLS illegal! The End.
